Moving with Kids
Last Friday I had the pleasure of bringing my 4 year old daughter into the Moishe's' offices for the day. While she was there I showed her around, introduced her to co-workers and allowed her to play in a variety of Moishe's moving boxes. About mid-way through the afternoon, the interweaving of my home life and my professional one set me to thinking about one of the most difficult aspects of making a residential move - handling the planning,
preparation and execution of a move without
ostracizing or upsetting your children.
The number one way to ease your child into a new home is including them in the process. Before you even call the moving company, take a day trip to your new neighborhood and home to show your child around. Explain to them why you're moving and how that will affect their day to day life. Asking them how they feel about where furniture will go in the new house and giving them a small say in various other small decisions regarding the move will go a long way in their eyes.
Moishe's has helped a lot of families move over the last twenty years, and I can say for certain that the number one worry kids have leading up to a move is that they won't ever seen their friends again. A great way to approach and alleviate these fears is to personally take your kid to his friends homes to take down their address and phone numbers.
There are dozens of tips and suggestions floating around online about exactly how to handle moving with kids, but most of it boils down to a simple idea - don't let the move become more important than your child. No matter how stressed you get with the planning process, always remember to set aside time to forget about your worries and talk to and play with the kids. You'll be suprised not just by how much it helps them, but how good it is for you, too.
Summer Moving Season
The weather in New York has been glorious this week, and the sunny skies and 75 degree weather means that the heat and humidity of Summer in the city are soon to follow. Summer is a busy time for Moishe's. Nearly 42 million Americans move to a new home each year, and approximately half of them do so during the Summer months. In an effort to help customers prevent overspending or
over stressing, I've put together a short list of guidelines to consider on your moving day.
1. Ask for a written statement. Be certain to provide
accurate information about how many boxes/items need to be moved, as well as any additional difficulties that may take place on moving day (ie, your new apartment is on the sixth floor in a walk-up or your new road is extremely narrow). Giving a detailed account of the services you require ensures that you receive an accurate statement.
2. On moving day, stay available. Provide the moving company with your mobile number. This allows the driver and delivery team to get in touch with you immediately if they need directions or run into another form of trouble.
3. Finally, keep your composure. Take it from me, no moving day has
ever gone 100% according to plan. Keeping an open mind and a cool head when you hit a few snags in your plan will help you to make better decisions and avoid damaged, lost or forgotten items.
Revlon Run/Walk for Women
Tomorrow, Moishe's is proud to sponsor the Revlon Run/Walk for Cancer. Moishe’s participation in the event has been an ongoing effort, including free advertisement on the side of our large fleet of moving trucks, as well as a ten percent discount on one move for all registered participants.Moishe’s hopes that our mobile billboards will aide in a great turnout for the event tomorrow morning, despite forecasts of inclement weather.
Moishe's has always considered itself to be a charity minded corporation, and the Revlon Run/Walk is one of many examples of our dedication to the Tri-State Community. In addition to our sponsorship of the event, many of our employees will participate in the days festivities. Several have volunteered to walk for Moishe's, rain or shine, and others have put forth monetary contributions to the cause.
The Run/Walk, founded in 2003, has gradually become one of the largest fundraising events of it's kind in America. Promoters of the annual charity event expect over 40,000 New Yorkers to take part in the 5k trek. To date, the Run/Walk in New York and it's sister event in Los Angeles have contributed nearly $50 million to cancer research, counseling and outreach programs.
