Nearing Summer's End

August is the busiest month of the year for Moishe's, but it also marks the end of summer and the end of moving season. We've had a great three months of summer and gotten the chance to move thousands of New Yorkers into their new homes. As we move forward into the cooler, fall months, don't forget that Moishe's offers the perfect solution for the not-so-easy to forget problem in New York of not having enough space.

Moishe's has self storage facilities across NYC and the rest of the NY Tri-State, and we offer affordable prices on a place to put up all your bicycles, sports equipment and swim trunks. Now that we're almost finished with the summer high-season, do yourself a favor and make some extra room in the house for blankets, bulky coats and a few dozen extra scarfs. You'll find all the information you need for a last minute summer move or all our storage services at Moishe's Website.

Moishe's Box Exchange Site

I've discussed Moishe's Going Green Campaign quite a bit here on the CEO blog, and today I'd like to talk about another exciting aspect of our transition. The Moishe's Box Exchange website is now officially up, running and being used. It's a totally free exchange service in the vain of Craigslist that provides a place for people to log on and find or get rid of boxes and packing materials.

The Box Exchange site is still in Beta Test mode, but it's easily accessible via the Moishe's website homepage. I just logged in myself and am happy to note that a handful of New Yorkers have already logged in and started interacting. If you're planning a move and need packing supplies or just finished one and looking to get rid of all the boxes sitting around the house, the box exchange is the perfect place to go. Follow the link above to get started today!

Life at Moishe's

Last week Moishe's held our annual summer barbecue. I apologize in advance for the marginally sappy nature of this post, but the experience left me with glowing things to say. The afternoon was spent eating and laughing at our headquarters in Jersey city, and as I looked around at all of the movers and executives, customer service reps and marketing types intermingling, I was reminded 10 fold of just how lucky I am to be a part of the Moishe's community.

Being a higher-up at the company, it's sometimes easy to forget just how many people make up the Moishe's team. From the ground up, we're a company that's built a reputation on our helpful staff, and nothing could remind me of that more than hanging around with people from all levels of the crew for the afternoon. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this post is my way of saying thanks. Thank you to everyone at Moishe's who gives 100% - day after day, week after week, year after year. It's a pleasure to work with all of you, and I'm proud to call Moishe's my home.

More on the Moishe's YouTube Video

Today I'd like to share a bit of the excellent response we've been getting on our YouTube video, Super Packer. If you haven't seen the video already, you can check it out here. A daily Marketing blog and newsletter, Post Advertising, had nothing but great things to say. Have a look at just a piece of the write up -

The stark soundscape in Moishe's Moving and Storage's new film Super Packer evokes a wonderful negative space, reminiscent of the bleak reality of Franz Kafka's The Trial. There comes times in the lives of men when forces beyond your imagination descend upon you and throw you into a world of confusion and packing tape."

Moishe's at the Movies

I mentioned last week our new YouTube video series, but what you might not know about Moishe's is that we've slowly but surely been working our way into the movie business. In addition to our head-first dive into the world of YouTube, we've been stepping onto the Hollywood stage as well.

On the homepage of our new website, you'll see a link to You Don't Mess with the Zohan, a recent Adam Sandler film where Moishe's movers and trucks play a prominent role. The film is hilarious, and Moishe's was even mentioned by name in The New Yorker review. Last week Moishe's took part in yet another motion picture filming in New York, this one a smaller film written and starring Aasif Mandvi, who many of you may know as a reporter from Jon Stewart's The Daily Show. Our movers had a blast on the set, and we're looking forward to seeing the finished product sometime soon.

7 TO THE PALACE is a heartwarming comedy about Samir (Aasif Mandvi), a talented Indian-American cook who dreams of being a great French chef. When he is forced to abandon his dream and run his father's Indian restaurant in Jackson Heights, his life is forever changed. Learning the alchemy of Indian cuisine from a mystical larger than life immigrant cab driver, Samir manages to heal himself and his family, fall in love and turn a dreary run down greasy spoon restaurant into one of New York's most talked about eateries.

Today I'd like to announce Moishe's official partnership with Trees For the Future, a wonderful non-profit organization dedicated to helping communities around the world to plant trees. Upon signing our contract today, Moishe's will now donate a portion of the proceeds from each of their moves to Trees for the Future.

According to Trees for the Future, each Moishe's donation translates to roughly ten newly planted trees.
Moving with Kids

Last Friday I had the pleasure of bringing my 4 year old daughter into the Moishe's' offices for the day. While she was there I showed her around, introduced her to co-workers and allowed her to play in a variety of Moishe's moving boxes. About mid-way through the afternoon, the interweaving of my home life and my professional one set me to thinking about one of the most difficult aspects of making a residential move - handling the planning, preparation and execution of a move without ostracizing or upsetting your children.

The number one way to ease your child into a new home is including them in the process. Before you even call the moving company, take a day trip to your new neighborhood and home to show your child around. Explain to them why you're moving and how that will affect their day to day life. Asking them how they feel about where furniture will go in the new house and giving them a small say in various other small decisions regarding the move will go a long way in their eyes.

Moishe's has helped a lot of families move over the last twenty years, and I can say for certain that the number one worry kids have leading up to a move is that they won't ever seen their friends again. A great way to approach and alleviate these fears is to personally take your kid to his friends homes to take down their address and phone numbers.

There are dozens of tips and suggestions floating around online about exactly how to handle moving with kids, but most of it boils down to a simple idea - don't let the move become more important than your child. No matter how stressed you get with the planning process, always remember to set aside time to forget about your worries and talk to and play with the kids. You'll be suprised not just by how much it helps them, but how good it is for you, too.

Summer Moving Season

The weather in New York has been glorious this week, and the sunny skies and 75 degree weather means that the heat and humidity of Summer in the city are soon to follow. Summer is a busy time for Moishe's. Nearly 42 million Americans move to a new home each year, and approximately half of them do so during the Summer months. In an effort to help customers prevent overspending or over stressing, I've put together a short list of guidelines to consider on your moving day.

1. Ask for a written statement. Be certain to provide accurate information about how many boxes/items need to be moved, as well as any additional difficulties that may take place on moving day (ie, your new apartment is on the sixth floor in a walk-up or your new road is extremely narrow). Giving a detailed account of the services you require ensures that you receive an accurate statement.

2. On moving day, stay available. Provide the moving company with your mobile number. This allows the driver and delivery team to get in touch with you immediately if they need directions or run into another form of trouble.

3. Finally, keep your composure. Take it from me, no moving day has ever gone 100% according to plan. Keeping an open mind and a cool head when you hit a few snags in your plan will help you to make better decisions and avoid damaged, lost or forgotten items.

Revlon Run/Walk for Women

Tomorrow, Moishe's is proud to sponsor the Revlon Run/Walk for Cancer. Moishe’s participation in the event has been an ongoing effort, including free advertisement on the side of our large fleet of moving trucks, as well as a ten percent discount on one move for all registered participants.Moishe’s hopes that our mobile billboards will aide in a great turnout for the event tomorrow morning, despite forecasts of inclement weather.

Moishe's has always considered itself to be a charity minded corporation, and the Revlon Run/Walk is one of many examples of our dedication to the Tri-State Community. In addition to our sponsorship of the event, many of our employees will participate in the days festivities. Several have volunteered to walk for Moishe's, rain or shine, and others have put forth monetary contributions to the cause.

The Run/Walk, founded in 2003, has gradually become one of the largest fundraising events of it's kind in America. Promoters of the annual charity event expect over 40,000 New Yorkers to take part in the 5k trek. To date, the Run/Walk in New York and it's sister event in Los Angeles have contributed nearly $50 million to cancer research, counseling and outreach programs.

Moishe's Goes Green

This week I'd like to discuss Moishe's Moving & Storage's decision to go green. On Earth Day, 2008, Moishe's put into action an intensive program of changes and adjustments that make our company the first Green mover on the East Coast. Over the course of the past year, Moishe's has invested large amounts of time and energy in designing a comprehensive overhaul of the way the company functions. From transitioning to a new, paperless billing system to the bio fuel the Moishe's trucks will soon run on, we've redesigned our operations to reduce waste and pollution and become one of the most environmentally conscious companies in New York.

The decision to go green was natural for us. From the very beginning, Moishe's has taken great pride in being a socially responsible company. As a leader of the moving industry and the NY business community as a whole, we felt it was necessary to reduce our carbon footprint and make an authoritative move towards more enviro-friendly day-to-day operations. Below, I've laid out a list of the more impressive changes we're making at Moishe's. As we make our Green transition we encourage you to move forward with us. This Friday we are adding several new "going green" resources to our website, http://www.moishes.com/. I encourage you to read through them and see what you can do to make your home and your next move a little greener.

Moishe’s move to green includes several company-wide changes. The transition includes:

- A Community Box Exchange Program allowing customers to exchange re-usable boxes via a website operated by Moishe’s

- A 100 % paperless billing system

- Rental of light-weight and re-usable biodegradable boxes

- Replacing packing peanuts with biodegradable pellets made from recycled diapers

- Financial incentives for employees to live more environmentally responsible

- Transitioning to trucks powered by bio-fuel instead of gasoline

The Moving Expert

Moving Expert Blog Intro

My name is Eugene LeMay. I’m the President CEO of Moishe’s Moving and Storage Services. Moishe’s is one of the most trusted names in New York moving and storage, and we’ve helped thousands of people move since we opened 25 years ago.

As the American moving and storage business sector has grown, Moishe’s has grown with it. During the past 10 years our industry has undergone monumental transformations. Throughout this period of intense change Moishe’s has labored to push past out-dated procedures standard within the moving industry. Instead, we’ve consistently focused our energy and resources into finding newer and better solutions. From acclimating to a digitally driven business market to pushing the envelope as the first all-green mover on the East Coast, Moishe’s is a company that has become synonymous with phrases like “cutting edge” and “ground-breaking.”

At Moishe’s we believe that an educated customer is a good customer. Staying true to that philosophy, I’ve created this blog as a forum to aide our customers, as well as consumers across the United States, in need of professional moving advice.

I may be the CEO of one of the largest moving companies in New York, but I have a firm belief that providing customers with superior service requires keeping a finger strongly on the pulse of the public. Beginning today I will use this site to personally post bi-weekly advice about Moving and Storage services. Hopefully, my advice will help you to make more informed and responsible decisions the next time you hire a moving company or rent a storage space.

This blog serves as a place to find knowledgeable and experienced advice, but I also hope to see it become a place for questions and discussions. The latest idea we’d like to render out-dated at Moishe’s is that finding answers to questions should be a hassle. If you’re looking for the solution to a moving and storage-related question don’t hesitate to ask. I’m always taking questions via email at askgene@moishes.com. Thank you for visiting The Storage Expert, and I look forward to answering all of your questions soon.
